Ginseng – Youth Tonic?

Ginseng caught my attention long time ago. I like to visit Asian markets from time to time and it’s hard to not notice that everything there has a variation with ginseng in it – ranging from different teas to shampoo. However, only my genuine interest in the adaptogenic herbs brought up ginseng in new light to me.

Science Profile

Ginseng (scientific name – Panax) is a plant typically grown in cooler climates. Most valuable part of it is a root. Here are some of a myriad health benefits this wonder root can give you.

  • Energy – and I mean ENERGY! It works better than caffeine, trust me. What is even more surprising is its ability to relax you at particularly stressful situations (isn’t it weird?). Being an adaptogenic tonic it adapts to the body necessities at the given moment.
  • Cardiovascular tonic – ginseng normalizes blood pressure, positively influences blood regeneration and circulation.
  • Digestion – the root aids in stabilizing blood sugar and helps liver to detox. It is used for treating diabetes, inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis), loss of appetite, intestinal problems etc.
  • Mental productivity – ginseng activates your brain potential, improves memory and productivity, increases ability to absorb and process information better.
  • Hormonal health – panax normalizes the hormonal production processes in the body, especially improving fertility and sexual health in both men and women.
  • Anti-aging – it is believed that regular consumption of ginseng will prolong your life and make you healthier and younger. It is even prescribed to the cancer patients in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Gingeseng come in capsules (dried root), tea form and tincture. Try to find the one that works best for you. It is recommended to take 200-500 mg one to two times daily (source).

Did You Know?

American ginseng has been shown to inhibit tumor growth. In one laboratory study on colorectal cancer cells, researchers found that American ginseng possessed powerful anti-cancer properties (source).

Personal Experience

I love taking adaptogens in the morning and ginseng is on my rotation at all times. After trying it life is not the same anymore. Especially if you have kids)
